Lahore Local Customs & Etiquette

A little cultural awareness goes a long way in Lahore, where hospitality is a point of pride. Here are the essentials.

Hospitality

Lahoris are famously warm โ€” expect invitations for tea, selfie requests and genuine curiosity about you. Accepting graciously (a cup of tea, a friendly chat) is part of the experience.

Greetings

‘Assalam-o-Alaikum’ (peace be upon you) is the standard greeting. A handshake between the same gender is common; many prefer a hand-on-heart gesture rather than cross-gender contact โ€” follow the other person’s lead.

Religious respect

At mosques and shrines: shoes off, modest dress, women cover their hair in prayer halls. Avoid visiting during the busiest prayer times unless attending. During Ramadan, avoid eating or drinking in public in daytime.

Photography of people

Always ask before photographing individuals, especially women. Most people happily agree, particularly at Wagah and in bazaars.

Other norms

Use your right hand for eating and giving/receiving. Public displays of affection are uncommon. Modesty in dress and behaviour is appreciated everywhere.

Your guide will quietly steer you through all of this โ€” but a little awareness makes your welcome even warmer.

Common questions

Will people mind if I take photos?
Ask first for people, especially women โ€” most say yes happily. Monuments are generally fine (check rules inside some galleries).
What should I know about Ramadan?
Daytime eating in public is discouraged; restaurants serve travellers discreetly, and the post-sunset food scene is spectacular.
