Overview

Commissioned by Emperor Aurangzeb and completed in 1673, Badshahi Mosque is a monument of red sandstone and marble whose vast courtyard can hold tens of thousands. Facing Lahore Fort across the Hazuri Bagh, with the tomb of Allama Iqbal alongside, it forms the ceremonial heart of old Lahore.

Good to know

• Closed to tourist visits during prayer times, especially Friday midday, we time around it.
• Shoes off at entry; women need a headscarf in the prayer hall (spares carried).
• Sunset from the courtyard, with the Fort opposite, is Lahore’s defining view.

Dress & etiquette
