Pakistan’s currency is the rupee (PKR). Here’s how to handle money smoothly in Lahore.
Cash vs card
Modern hotels, boutiques and upscale restaurants take cards, but much of everyday Lahore โ the old city, food stalls, rickshaws, small shops โ is cash-first. Always carry some rupees.
ATMs
ATMs are plentiful in modern areas (Gulberg, the Mall, Defence) and many accept foreign Visa/Mastercard, though some charge fees and have withdrawal limits. Use ATMs at banks or reputable locations, and have a backup card.
Exchanging money
Bring some USD, GBP or EUR to change at licensed exchange dealers or banks for good rates; the airport works for a small initial amount. Keep receipts.
Tips on cash
Carry a mix of small and larger notes; small notes are handy for rickshaws, tips and stalls. Don’t flash large amounts in crowded markets.
On our tours, entrance fees and transport are handled, so you mainly need cash for meals, shopping and tips.
