Lahore is relaxed by Pakistani standards, but modest, weather-appropriate dress is both respectful and practical. Here’s what works.
General principles
For everyone: cover shoulders and knees. Lightweight, loose clothing is coolest and most comfortable. Local shalwar kameez is ideal (and easy to buy or have tailored) but not required โ modest Western clothes are fine.
For women
You don’t need to cover your hair on the street, but you’ll need a headscarf inside mosque prayer halls (our guides carry spares). Loose trousers or long skirts and tops that cover the shoulders and upper arms work well. A dupatta (long scarf) is versatile for sun, dust and covering up when needed.
For men
Long trousers are best; shorts are uncommon and can look out of place at religious sites. Light shirts with sleeves are ideal in the heat.
At mosques & shrines
Shoes come off, so slip-ons save time. Modest dress is essential; women cover their hair. We brief you before each visit.
Seasonal notes
Summer: breathable cotton, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen. Winter: a jacket for cool evenings and foggy mornings. Comfortable, sturdy shoes matter year-round for the uneven old-city lanes.
When in doubt, err modest โ it’s appreciated and makes Lahore’s famous welcome even warmer.
