Breakfast (nashta) is a serious, glorious affair in Lahore. Here’s what to eat and where.
The classics
Halwa puri, fluffy fried bread with semolina halwa, spiced chickpeas and potato, is the iconic Lahori breakfast. Also legendary: nihari (often eaten at breakfast), paye (trotters), siri paye, and fresh parathas with eggs, yogurt and chai.
Where to go
Old-city breakfast spots and Gawalmandi are the heartland; certain famous halwa puri and nihari houses draw queues from dawn. Your guide knows the best current ones.
The experience
A proper Lahori breakfast is rich, communal and unhurried, sweet, savoury, carb-heavy and utterly satisfying. Come hungry and plan a lighter lunch.
Lighter options
Hotels serve international breakfasts; cafés on MM Alam Road offer eggs, pastries and good coffee if you want something gentler.
