About Alamgiri Gate

The Alamgiri Gate is the grand western entrance to Lahore Fort, built by Emperor Aurangzeb (Alamgir) in 1673 to face his newly completed Badshahi Mosque. Its great arched portal, flanked by fluted semicircular bastions, is one of the most photographed sights in Lahore.

Broad enough for royal elephant processions, it frames the ceremonial space of the Hazuri Bagh between Fort and mosque.

Highlights

  • Monumental arch — A vast entrance flanked by domed bastions.
  • Hazuri Bagh setting — Opening onto the garden between Fort and mosque.
  • Aurangzeb’s era — Built to complement Badshahi Mosque opposite.
  • Photography — The classic frame with the mosque behind you.
